My guess is, the first fold is not the long edge or long side. When you make the first fold in half, fold it the long way, not the short way. Each row that you add has such a gradual increase that when your adding rows it's not really noticeable until your completely finished. Just keep pulling the thread tight when you add rows to prevent gapping. I also agree with you about the wrapper from soda bottles being thin but I also love to use them.
